Finding motivation for outdoor winter cycling can be tough, you'll end up riding cold, more often than not soaked through and wishing your decided to use the smart trainer. There is no such thing as bad weather just bad kit, not wearing enough or the right clothing is a common mistake made by cyclists.
UK weather is unpredictable and sudden changes can catch a rider out, glove liners, gilet and a raincape should be packed. Once you start to get colder and/or wetter, your body will soon shut down and there is nothing you can do about it. Advances in clothing technology mean that carrying a decent waterproof or windproof jacket with you need not take up much space or weight. Your clothing needs to have the functionality to keep you warm if you get caught out.
If you are anything like me, your extremities suffer the most in the cold. Frozen hands and feet are just awful, so invest in decent winter gloves with a long cuff to go over your jacket, winter socks and neoprene overshoes. Invest the best clothing you can afford, which is specifically designed for cold temperatures are available. Remember you can remove clothes but you can’t put on what you don’t have, so on your next long cafe run why not take a spare base layer. You can thank me later!
